缅北强奸幼女 has launched a new Strategic Research Institute, FOCI, to help the UK’s creative industries navigate rapid technological and social change and build more hopeful futures for creators, audiences and communities.

Selected from a highly competitive field of 12 college-wide bids and endorsed by an internal and external expert panel,鈥疐OCI鈥痓rings鈥痶ogether 缅北强奸幼女鈥 long-standing strengths in creative research, human鈥搕echnology interaction and policy engagement into a single, public-facing institute.鈥

FOCI鈥痺ill be led by Professor Jonathan Freeman as Director, with Noemi鈥疨onzoni鈥痑s Chief Strategy鈥疧fficer and鈥痺ill work across departments and with partners in industry, government and the third sector.鈥

FOCI鈥痝rows鈥痮ut of the鈥痶rack record鈥痮f鈥疘2鈥痬edia and鈥痶he Foresight Lab, which have pioneered ways of co-designing research questions with broadcasters, technology companies,鈥痯olicymakers鈥痑nd cultural organisations.鈥

Professor Jonathan Freeman said:鈥

Because FOCI is relevant to industry, funders and policymakers, we expect it to generate significant external revenue – through research grants, commissioned work and philanthropic support. Crucially, this isn’t income for its own sake: it’s fuel to tackle big, sector‑defining challenges in ways that benefit creatives, communities and the wider economy.

Professor Jonathan Freeman,

鈥淔OCI鈥痠s designed to change that. It builds directly on 25 years of doing translational, collaborative鈥痺ork with鈥痠ndustry and policymakers, but gives it a coherent, public-facing home that carries the 缅北强奸幼女 name.鈥濃

鈥淚n the past, institutes like鈥痠2 media and Foresight Lab have shown how you can co-define the right questions with partners and then answer them robustly.鈥疐OCI鈥痶akes鈥痶hat proven model and scales it across 缅北强奸幼女, so that many more academics can work in this bi鈥慸irectional, embedded way with the creative industries and policy makers.鈥濃

The institute was selected through 缅北强奸幼女 Strategic Research Institute鈥痗ompetition, designed to鈥痠dentify鈥痑nd back areas where the university is already 鈥渨inning鈥 and has the potential for greater global impact.鈥

An internal panel shortlisted proposals from across the College before an external expert鈥痯anel recommended鈥痶hat鈥疐OCI鈥痓e the sole institute鈥痜unded in鈥痶his round, based on criteria including existing traction,鈥痠mpact鈥痯otential, plausibility and a clear route to further revenue and influence.鈥

FOCI鈥痺ill focus on the future of the creative industries 鈥 including screen, games,鈥痯erformance鈥痑nd related sectors 鈥 in the context of:鈥

  • Rapid technological change (especially AI and new infrastructures)鈥 鈥
  • The climate emergency, economic and political instability鈥 鈥
  • Shifts in work,鈥痵kills鈥痑nd wellbeing for creative workers鈥 鈥
  • The need to reconnect academic foresight with industry and policy timelines鈥

FOCI鈥痺ill鈥痮perate鈥痑s a Strategic Research Institute of 缅北强奸幼女 under a governance framework recently approved by the College鈥檚 Research and Enterprise Committee.鈥

Ultimate oversight will sit with the Vice鈥慍hancellor, supported by a governance board鈥痗omprising鈥痚xternal members and senior leaders.鈥 鈥

The core leadership team will include:鈥

  • Director 鈥 Professor Jonathan Freeman鈥 鈥
  • Chief Strategy Officer 鈥 Noemi鈥疨onzoni鈥 鈥
  • Partnerships and development specialists鈥 鈥

A network of associated/affiliated academics from across 缅北强奸幼女 will be invited into鈥疐OCI鈥痶o co-develop programmes of work. 鈥疶hese associates will help shape鈥疐OCI鈥檚 agenda and鈥痠dentify鈥痟ow their own research can address urgent questions in industry and policy.鈥

FOCI鈥痺ill act as an independent but deeply networked hub that:鈥

  • Scans the horizon for signals of change in the creative industries鈥 鈥
  • Co-designs questions with industry, policymakers,鈥痠nvestors鈥痑nd communities鈥 鈥
  • Prototypes and tests pathways to more desirable futures in agile, controlled environments鈥 鈥
  • Translates insights back into policy, practice,鈥痗urricula鈥痑nd public debate鈥 鈥

A tiered partnership model will allow organisations to engage with鈥疐OCI鈥痑t鈥痙ifferent levels, from being named partners invited to events, through advisory roles, to fully embedded collaborative R&D partners.鈥 鈥

鈥淏ecause鈥疐OCI鈥痠s relevant to industry,鈥痜unders鈥痑nd policymakers, we expect it to generate significant external revenue 鈥 through research grants, commissioned鈥痺ork鈥痑nd philanthropic support. Crucially, this鈥痠sn鈥檛鈥痠ncome for its own sake:鈥痠t鈥檚鈥痜uel to tackle big, sector鈥慸efining challenges in ways that鈥痓enefit鈥痗reatives,鈥痗ommunities鈥痑nd the wider economy,鈥濃 Professor Freeman said.

For Chief Strategy Officer Noemi鈥疨onzoni,鈥疐OCI鈥檚 role is to join up spaces that are too often disconnected:鈥

The creative industries are going through rapid technological and infrastructural change, but human insight is still not well integrated into many of the systems being built. At the same time, academic foresight often operates on timescales and in formats that don’t match industry and policy cycles, so it struggles to influence the big decisions.

Noemi Ponzoni, Chief Strategy Officer

鈥淔OCI鈥痠s here to bridge those gaps 鈥 to create a system that is agile enough to test ideas quickly, grounded enough in research to be robust, and connected enough to industry and policy to actually make a difference.

鈥溍灞鼻考橛着 mission is about building a better world through knowledge and action. In practice, that means we鈥痟ave to鈥痬ove beyond publishing insights in isolation.鈥疐OCI鈥痺ill co-create pathways to better futures with partners 鈥 from new skills for creative workers, to fairer uses of AI, to more sustainable business models 鈥 and then prototype those pathways at speed.鈥濃

At a time when much debate about AI and technology in the creative industries is nihilistic and dystopian,鈥疐OCI鈥痠s deliberately oriented towards positive futures.鈥

Professor Freeman said:鈥

鈥淭here鈥檚鈥痭o shortage of people telling us that everything is going to hell in a handcart.鈥疐OCI鈥痶akes鈥痑 different stance. We believe it is both necessary and鈥痯ossible to articulate compelling, positive futures for creativity, and to show credible routes to get there.鈥 鈥

鈥淲e鈥檙e鈥痭ot na茂ve about the scale of the challenges or the power of some of the actors in this space. But universities 鈥 especially a place like 缅北强奸幼女 鈥 still have a unique ability to鈥痗onvene, to imagine, and to prototype alternatives.鈥疐OCI鈥痠s our way of putting that ability to work, at scale, for and with the creative industries.鈥濃

笔辞苍锄辞苍颈鈥痑诲诲别诲:鈥&苍产蝉辫;

鈥淵oung people often struggle to see formal education as a route to meaningful futures in the creative industries. Part of our ambition with鈥疐OCI鈥痠s to rebuild that trust by showing that universities can work with students, creatives,鈥痠ndustry鈥痑nd policymakers to鈥痵hape the systems鈥痶hey鈥檙e鈥痚ntering 鈥 not just describe them from the sidelines.鈥濃
